Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is a highly effective, proven technology for eliminating microbiological contamination. Unlike chemical disinfectants, UV light physically alters the DNA of microorganisms, instantly preventing them from reproducing and causing infection.

The Disinfection Process

For UV disinfection to be effective, water must undergo proper pre-treatment. The process ensures pathogens cannot "hide" from the ultraviolet light.

Stage 1: Pre-Filtration

Water first passes through micron filters (usually 5 micron or less). This is a critical step to remove turbidity and suspended solids which could otherwise cast "shadows", allowing microbes to survive the UV exposure.

Stage 2: Chamber Entry

The clear, filtered water flows into the UV reactor chamber. Our chambers are constructed from electro-polished 316L Stainless Steel to maximize internal reflection and ensure zero dead-zones.

Stage 3: UV-C Exposure

As water flows around the high-purity quartz sleeves, it is bombarded with intense 254 nanometer (UV-C) light. This specific wavelength is highly absorbable by microbial DNA and RNA.

Stage 4: Instant Sterilization

The genetic material of the bacteria and viruses is disrupted, preventing replication. The water exits the reactor instantly sterilized and ready for immediate consumption or process use.

Why choose UV over traditional Chlorine dosing?
UV disinfection is superior because it adds absolutely no chemicals to the water. This means there is no altered taste or odor, and more importantly, it does not create carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) like Trihalomethanes (THMs) which are common with chlorine. Furthermore, UV instantly kills chlorine-resistant pathogens like Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
Does a UV system kill all bacteria and viruses?
Yes. When properly sized for the maximum flow rate and specific water transmittance (UVT), the UV-C dose is lethal to 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, molds, and cysts. It is crucial to never exceed the system's rated flow rate to ensure proper exposure time.
What maintenance does a UV system require?
Maintenance is very straightforward. The UV lamps degrade in intensity over time and must be replaced annually (usually every 9,000 to 12,000 hours). Additionally, the quartz sleeve housing the lamp needs to be periodically removed and cleaned of any mineral scale to ensure the light can penetrate the water freely.
Can I pass raw, unfiltered water directly into the UV system?
No, this is highly discouraged. UV light travels in straight lines; if the water has high turbidity (suspended dirt or particles), the microorganisms can hide behind the particles in the "shadow", allowing them to pass through unharmed. Proper pre-filtration (usually 5 microns) is mandatory before UV exposure.
